Rain Garden Refresh
Click and Drag for Before and After
We were contacted to rehabilitate a Rain Garden gone wrong. The purpose of a Rain Garden is to intercept rain water that would otherwise be channeled to a drain and allow it to soak into the soil. Rain gardens naturally filter the water by percolating through layers of roots and soil, and that clean water eventually filters down to our aquifers. The plantings all help take up water and to filter it before the remainder percolates down to recharge groundwater, which makes plant selection exceedingly important.
With this rain garden, it was not draining properly and the plants were failing. We needed to correct it in order to make the garden thrive and fulfill its purpose. It takes careful planning and forethought to get it right.
DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
To restore functionality, we excavated the existing garden, ensuring a proper grade and depth. By performing simple soil tests, we determined the makeup of the soil and amended it as needed to create the proper amount of permeability. Finally, we selected the proper plants that thrive in a wet environment and provide natural filtration. Of course, we also selected plants that are aesthetically pleasing and match the rest of the garden. The end product is a thriving, low-maintenance Rain Garden that keeps water out of our storm drains and recharges our aquifers with clean water.
Rain gardens can beautify your home, adding to its value, while protecting your property and your community from flooding.
